Novak Djokovic hilariously used the ATP skit featuring his character Bert Critchley as the reasoning for his 2024 title drought thus far and joked that there has been a change in the ATP scriptwriters.
Djokovic's 2024 season has seen him lose in the United Cup Quarter-Final to Alex de Minaur, Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open and the most shocking was his loss to World No.123 at the time in Luca Nardi at Indian Wells. In his first foray back in California since 2019, he lost swiftly and then withdrew from Miami.
Albeit despite using balancing his personal and professional schedule as his reasoning, Djokovic has been in Miami this past week both relaxing with friends and also attending player parties at the tournament. But with the clay court season likely being packed with many ATP 1000's including Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid before Roland Garros, it is easy to see why he might take a break.
The skit he referenced to depicts tennis as a scripted reality show with Djokovic playing a character called Bert Critchley which was one of the best social media moments in the first part of the season and that was his excuse.
"For Bert Critchley, it’s all about winning… and then you brought the new script writer," Djokovic wrote.
He also did similar after losing in the Australian Open to Jannik Sinner. "Normally the writers start the season with my character Novak winning the Australian Open title. So, for anyone that doesn’t like the beginning of this season, please contact the director @atptour," he posted on X.
