German tennis star
Alexander Zverev doesn't think banning Russian and Belarusian players from competing at
Wimbledon was fair.
The German whose parents are Russians is never afraid to speak his mind and he wasn't again when asked about the decision in Munich ahead of the tennis event next week. He explained that there was no reason to ban the players while also denouncing the ongoing war in Ukraine:
“There is no reason that Russian and Belarusian players cannot participate in Wimbledon. It's something against Russia, I understand that. I think we are all against the war, what is happening in Ukraine is inhumane and should not happen."
Zverev further said he spoke to
Andrey Rublev, a player affected by the ban and one of his close friends for many years saying:
"I spoke to Andrey Rublev and he is also ready to help Ukraine. He is ready to oppose the war, he is ready to send the money from his earnings to Ukraine."
Zverev is just one of a few selected tennis players who have spoken out against the decision as Novak Djokovic among others as well as tennis legends Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova spoke out against it as well.
