Italy’s Jannik Sinner believes that it will be too early to give a title to his rivalry with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Both players will face off in the final of Wimbledon 2025 on Sunday. It will be the second consecutive final of a major where Sinner will face Alcaraz.
Earlier this year at the French Open, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in a five-set thriller with a score of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. During the contest, Alcaraz saved three championship points in the fourth set. The match lasted more than five hours and officially became the second-longest final in the Grand Slams' history in the Open era.
Sinner defeated former world number one Novak Djokovic in the semifinal in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to cement his spot in the final of Wimbledon for the first time in his career. On the other hand, Alcaraz, who is also the defending champion, defeated America’s Taylor Fritz in the semifinal with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. After the match, Sinner was asked what the name of his rivalry with Alcaraz would be, considering the rivalry between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic was termed as the ‘Big 3’. In response, Sinner stated that it is too early to name the rivalry with Alcaraz. Sinner was also of the opinion that rivalries are good for the sport and believes that if both players continue to deliver success in the next three or four years, then people can start thinking about giving a name to their rivalry.
“No name yet [smiling],” said Sinner. “Because you cannot compare what the Big 3 did for 15+ years. 6 grand slams is just one and a half years. It’s not that big. We find ourselves again in this position. This is the 2nd consecutive Slam final we are playing each other. Which is great from my side. I believe it’s good for the sport. The more rivalries we have from now on, the better it is. People want to see young players going against each other. I’m happy to be in that position. But let’s see in the future. If we can make that happen for the next 3 or 4 years, then people can think about it. Let’s see.”
