DC Open WTA Day Three Round-Up | Alexandra Eala ends Fernandez’s reign while Naomi Osaka benefits from early retirement

The second round of the WTA 500 DC Open continued on Day Three in Washington, with the quarter-final lineup taking shape after another day of high-quality action on the hard courts.

Alexandra Eala stole the spotlight with a statement victory over defending champion Leylah Fernandez, overcoming a dramatic second-set comeback to reach the last eight and lead the quarter-final field. The Filipina joins a strong group of contenders that also includes Naomi Osaka, Liudmila Samsonova and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Meanwhile, Osaka advanced after Ashlyn Krueger was forced to retire, Samsonova continued her impressive run with a dominant victory over Xinyu Wang, and Cocciaretto produced one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by defeating second seed Emma Navarro in three sets.

Alexandra Eala delivered another major statement in Washington, defeating defending champion Leylah Fernandez to reach the DC Open quarter-finals. The Filipina qualifier produced a composed performance against the former champion, taking control early before holding her nerve in a dramatic second set.

Eala dominated the opening set, breaking Fernandez twice and controlling the longer rallies with her left-handed game to take a 6-2 lead. However, Fernandez responded strongly in the second set, turning around a 5-1 deficit by winning five consecutive games and moving within one game of forcing a decider.

The Canadian had two chances to serve for the set, but Eala refused to let the match slip away. The 21-year-old recovered at the perfect moment, winning five of the next six games to force a tiebreak, where she completely took control and closed out the victory 7-1.

Eala advances to the quarter-finals, where she will face either Polina Kudermetova or second seed Elina Svitolina. The defeat ends Fernandez’s title defence and removes a significant number of ranking points from her total.

Naomi Osaka advanced to the next round of the DC Open after Ashlyn Krueger was forced to retire during the second set, but the Japanese star had already produced a convincing performance before the early finish. Osaka took control from the beginning, winning the opening set 6-3 and building a 3-1 advantage in the second before the match was brought to a conclusion.

Despite landing only 47% of her first serves, Osaka remained dominant behind her delivery and never faced a break point throughout the match. The four-time Grand Slam champion was particularly effective in the longer exchanges, using her power from the baseline to dictate play and consistently put pressure on Krueger.

Osaka’s ability to stay composed in the key moments allowed her to maintain control without facing any major danger on serve. The victory continues a positive run in Washington as she looks to build momentum during the North American hard-court swing.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto produced one of the biggest surprises of the day in Washington, defeating second seed Emma Navarro in a competitive three-set battle.

The Italian made the stronger start, taking the opening set 6-3 after finding the decisive moments in the longer rallies and making the most of her opportunities. Navarro responded in the second set, raising her level and creating the breakthrough needed to force a deciding set.

The American looked to have shifted momentum after levelling the match, but Cocciaretto remained composed under pressure. The Italian found the crucial break late in the deciding set before closing out the victory on serve to secure one of the best wins of her season.

Cocciaretto moves into the next round after another strong performance on the Washington hard courts, while Navarro misses the chance to make a deep run as one of the tournament’s top seeds.

Liudmila Samsonova booked her place in the DC Open quarter-finals with a dominant straight-sets victory over Xinyu Wang. The Russian controlled the match from the beginning, using her power and aggressive baseline game to put constant pressure on Wang’s serve. Samsonova secured multiple breaks in both sets and never allowed her opponent to establish rhythm.

Although Wang saved several match points while trying to extend the contest, Samsonova stayed composed and converted her opportunity to close out a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win. Samsonova advances to the quarter-finals, where she will face the winner of Diana Shnaider vs Anastasia Potapova.
