Longtime Canadian Open tournament director Eugene Lapierre recalled an instance when Wawrinka and Kyrgios almost fought in the locker room.
In a recent interview, Lapierre talked about many memories from his time as the tournament director and while many were happy ones, an ugly one is one of the most memorable memories he takes with him. Kyrgios and Wawrinka are not on good terms and that's hardly a secret. It all happened at the 2015 event when Kyrgios threw insults at Wawrinka during the match.
Unaware of them at the time, he only learnt about them after the match and immediately went to confront Kyrgios in the locker room. According to Lapierre, they had to be separated:
"Wawrinka hadn't heard, but Kyrgios' comments were on TV because of the microphones on the pitch. In a press conference, a journalist informed him of what had been said. Wawrinka was furious! It's like he just lost face in front of everyone. He quickly went down to the locker room, where Kyrgios was still. They had to be separated because it risked degenerating quickly."
The insults were directed towards his then-girlfriend Donna Vekic with Wawrinka tweeting after the whole incident:
"What was said I wouldn't say to my worst enemy. To stop so low is not only unacceptable but also beyond belief."
