Dominic Thiem defeated Roger Federer in the first match of the group stage at the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals in London 7-5 and 7-5.
After
Novak Djokovic did not spend a lot of time on the court, the crowd in London expected a lot from Federer and Thiem in the second match of the Björn Borg Group.
The match between the 3rd seeded Federer and 5th seeded Thiem started better for the younger Austrian. He broke the first Federer's service game to get an early lead. However, the Swiss was able to break back in the 4th game to level the score. Both players held their serve for some time until Thiem broke Federer's serve again to win the first set 7-5.
In the second set, it was Roger who had a breakpoint first. But he did not use it and again it seemed that a set will be decided by a tie-break. But then we saw the longest game of the match where Federer had 2 breakpoints, but also Thiem had 2 match points. And this time again the Austrian was more successful and earned first point in the group stage after 7-5 and 7-5 victory.
