Alexander Bublik and Frances Tiafoe are known for being involved in some titanic five-set battles at Grand Slam level. This time around, it was Bublik who came out on top in a four-hour battle as he made more progress at Wimbledon, winning 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(11), 4-6, 6-3.
The Kazakh has already played a fair amount of tennis this year at SW19, defeating Thanasi Kokkinakis in five sets in his opening test before a more comfortable win over Kyrian Jacquet set up a highly anticipated contest against Tiafoe.
The American was in good form following his title triumph at the Halle Open, but he could not continue this streak at Wimbledon and would fall in a dramatic match against Bublik who was overcome with emotion following the victory.

Bublik to cherish this result forever

The first game in the match was a break of serve that went the way of Tiafoe. There would not be another break of serve until halfway through the fourth set. Tiafoe went on to win the first set before consecutive tiebreaks both went the way of Bublik.
With his third set point, Bublik got level before a hugely enthralling third set was a huge chance missed for Tiafoe. 6-5 ahead against the serve, he failed to take five set points which would have put him 2-1 ahead. Another four were spurned in the tiebreak with Bublik also struggling to get over the line. With his third set point, he won the tiebreak in an incredible 13-11 scoreline.
Finally another break was witnessed, and it went the way of Tiafoe who would get back level and force a fifth set as the crowd's expectations grew on No.1 Court. Just beforehand, Bublik had hit an underarm ace with Tiafoe rooted on the spot, showing the flamboyant and entertaining side of the player.

When locked in, he is a force to be reckoned with. His first break of serve was at a crucial time. He sailed into a 4-1 lead after backing it up with a hold to love. Tiafoe could not respond and Bublik saw it out with his first match point. He kept his composure right until the end before collapsing on the floor following that crazy contest.
Afterwards, he tried to put this win into words. "There are always exceptional matches that stay etched in my memory. I think this one will be particularly special," he said. "The court was magnificent. We waged a fierce battle. This match will remain in my heart forever."
The big talking point was the third set when Tiafoe failed to take a stunning nine set points. He could have led 2-1 but instead Bublik kept himself in contention and finally was able to prevail. He hit a grand total of 48 aces in a supreme show of serving as he makes it to the fourth round for the second time. He will look to break new ground and reach a first ever quarter-final at Wimbledon, second at Grand Slam level, against another American, this time Taylor Fritz in what will be another thrilling tie.
