The 2005 ATP season was one for the records for Roger Federer, as the Swiss superstar was just hitting the peak of his powers.
Federer had won 11 singles titles, coupled with an 81-4 match record (95.2%). Till this date, that remains the third-best winning percentage in the Open Era behind John McEnroe (1984) and Jimmy Connors (1974).
At the year-ending
ATP Finals in Shanghai, Federer faced Argentine Gaston Gaudio in the semifinals. The 2004 French Open champion believed he stood a fighting chance as Federer was nursing an ankle injury. There was even some doubt that Federer would participate in the tournament two days before the event.
However, the Swiss Maestro showed little sign of being hindered as he put on a masterclass performance. He dominated the match from start to finish. This 6-0 6-0 drubbing still stands as the only double bagel ever recorded in
ATP Finals history.
