The men's doubles is complete at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with Matthew Ebden and John Peers starring and also Team USA combo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul restoring some honour for their country.
Ebden and Peers defeated Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram in the gold medal match meaning two medals for Team USA. The Aussie pairing produced some of their best tennis to clinch the win 6-7, 7-6, 10-8 in a thrilling gold medal match.
Neither team had dropped a set en route to the final. Krajicek and Ram were on track to seal the gold as they led by a set and a break. Yet Ebden and Peers rallied from 4-2 down to force a tie-break in the second.
This time they sealed it and produced an epic tie-break win. They moved 9-5 up in the decider but Krajicek and Ram saved the first three of their opponents gold medal points. Ebden and Peers converted the fourth though to seal the gold.
While after a pretty poor time in the singles aside from Paul and Collins reaching the latter stages, it was a bronze medal for childhood friends in Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul. They overcame Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 6-4.
They fired in 23 winners and three out of 11 break points to leave Paris with two men's tennis medals for Team USA. In Mixed Doubles and Women's Doubles which were seen as perhaps easier opportunities, it wasn't forthcoming.
Gauff and Fritz also stuttered in the singles and so it will be a welcome relief as they now head home towards Canada and Cincinnati after this weekend. While for Machac, it is nearly another medal after his moment with girlfriend (or is she) in Katerina Siniakova. But as the women's singles heads towards its conclusion, the men's doubles is now complete.
