Andy Murray announced he could play with the best in the world after his win against Sinner but he stumbled in the first match since then.
Murray faced off against Tommy Paul and the Brit failed to play his best tennis when he needed to resulting in a loss against a very inspired Paul. The American played well to take down Fritz in the previous round but today he raised it up a level especially because he played very aggressively. That is something that surprised Murray himself who did not know how to deal with it.
Paul served extremely well and attacked at every chance which frustrated Murray. The Brit was not able to handle the forehand of the American and that resulted in a rather quick finish of the first set with Paul taking it 6-2. The 2nd set was another one where Paul played a very strong combination of serve plus forehand.
The American returned well all match long, especially when presented with the chance of attacking Murray's 2nd serve. Murray however did find a way to win the 2nd set mostly by waiting patiently for his chance. Paul played one bad game and Murray broke him to take a lead before closing it out. During all of the match, Murray had issues with closing his service games but in the 2nd set, it worked.
In the 3rd set he faced many issues in holdinf off Paul mostly because his serve was really not working. Murray hit way below 50 % of his first serves and that gave Paul quite a lot of chances. Eventually he seized it towards the end of the match and closed it out with 6-3.

Tommy Paul beats Andy Murray 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinals in Stockholm against fellow American Tiafoe. Murray finishes the season without a semifinal and will need a wild card for the Australian Open.
