Coco Gauff eliminated Alycia Parks in the third round of the 2024 Australian Open with a score of 6-0, 6-2. The 2023 US Open champion dominated the match from start to finish, taking only an hour and three minutes to secure a spot in the second week of a Grand Slam for the 10th time in her career. Her best performances in Melbourne were reaching the fourth round in 2020 and 2023.
The 4th seed entered the tournament with solid victories over Karolina Schmiedlova and then her compatriot Caroline Dolehide. On the other hand, Parks arrived with good feelings about her form after defeating Daria Snigur and the former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez.
Both players, with a similar playing style, came out aggressively, but Gauff quickly demonstrated that she was well ahead of her compatriot. Parks' troubles began in the first game, where she was up 40-0 but failed to close it out, allowing Gauff to secure the break and quickly take the lead.
The differences between the two widened throughout the set, as Gauff claimed three consecutive breaks, capitalizing on every opportunity, and did not face any break points on her own serve. The world No. 4 didn't need to take too many risks, given Parks' errors. Parks totaled only 6 winners and 19 unforced errors in the first set, compared to Gauff's two winners and 5 unforced errors.
In the second set, Gauff maintained her composure and forced her opponent to continue making errors. The young star clearly dominated from the baseline in the return and exploited Parks' issues with her forehand throughout the match.
Parks had a decent start in the second set, defending her first two service games, although without creating any break opportunities against Gauff, who was hardly giving away points on her serve. In the fifth game, a new break from Coco Gauff arrived, giving her the definitive advantage in the match. The last three games of the match went to the 2023 US Open champion, who finished with a more than impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory over the talented Alycia Parks.
