Belinda Bencic did something that seemed fairly unlikely by winning the Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Bencic has had an up and down season from start to finish with her best matches coming on the grass weeks ahead of the Olympic Games. The Swiss player is a capable player which she showed by reaching the US Open semifinal earlier in her career.
The Gold medal was not the only medal Bencic brought back home to Switzerland. Together with Viktorija Golubic, she had a chance to win the doubles gold as well but they got beaten by Krejcikova and Siniakova. Nonetheless bringing two tennis medals back to Switzerland was unexpected and fans showed their appreciation.
Bencic was greeted by a sizeable crowd at the airport when she arrived back home to Switzerland. Check out the video of the welcome below.

The whole idea of giving out wildcards is to give new & up-coming players a chance at getting as much circuit match-practice under their belts as possible. And this is a HUGE must and opportunity for these new kids on the block. Why curtail opportunities for these newbies in favour of stalwart monopoly?? That just isn't fair. At least give these lesser known players a chance to become more familiar at playing in bigger tournaments & give them also a chance of getting the crowds behind these underdogs.
