Daniil Medvedev lost control in a match against Jannik Sinner at the ATP Finals and smashed his racket against the sideboard.
The Russian tennis player competed in the semifinals of the ATP Finals for the third time in his career, but this time, he suffered his first defeat at this stage. His opponent was the young Jannik Sinner, who has been relentless in the tournament, securing four consecutive victories to reach the final for the first time in his career.
The intense encounter was decided in three sets, and although the first two sets were highly competitive, the final set showcased Sinner's dominance as he ultimately secured the victory 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1. The support of the crowd was crucial for the Italian, and the Russian expressed his discomfort and frustration at the beginning of the third set. With a break point against him, Medvedev committed a double fault, giving Sinner a 2-0 advantage in a matter of minutes.
In the third game, the 2021 US Open champion made an error and smashed his racket against the court's sideboards. Additionally, he later confronted the audience, pointing directly at an individual in the crowd during the match.

Although it seemed that Medvedev would have a quick recovery by winning his next service game, Sinner, supported by the crowd and showcasing some of his best tennis, seized his opportunity again in the following service game of Medvedev, securing another break to end the match convincingly.
With this result, the Russian concludes the 2023 season with 5 titles, including the Masters 1000 Miami Open and Rome Open, the latter being his first title on clay. Additionally, his record was 66-18, the highest number of victories in his career and the record in 2023. Therefore, he finishes the year as the world No. 3, regardless of who wins the title at the ATP Finals.
