Cristian Garin and Camilo Ugo Carabelli experienced a tense moment at the end of their first-round match at the Bastad Open. The two South American players faced off on the Swedish clay, with Carabelli (World No. 59) taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory in a match that resumed after being suspended from Tuesday's schedule.
Garin (World No. 114) had a heated exchange of words with his opponent, with the chair umpire even having to intervene. As the match ended, the Argentinian was celebrating on his side of the net, and as the Chilean approached for the traditional handshake, Carabelli was heard calling his opponent a "bobo" ("fool"/"idiot").

"Why do you call me ‘idiot’?" Garin retorted to his opponent in Spanish. The Chilean was visibly upset and confronted his rival, as the exchange of words continued to escalate: "Why are you calling me 'fool’, what's wrong with you?" the Chilean was heard saying while the chair umpire interjected with "I don't understand," asking the players to speak in English.
Garin – a former World No. 17 – had started the match with an advantage on Tuesday, but only 5 games were played before it was suspended due to rain with him leading 3-2, with a break. The match resumed this Wednesday, and while no issues were apparent during play, Garin was reportedly annoyed by Carabelli's effusive celebration after the match.
