Former world No. 11 Sam Querrey addressed the Davis Cup controversy from the weekend’s tie between Belgium and Chile, specifically the clash between Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin. The American criticised Garin’s "weak" reaction and argued that the South American should have continued playing.

One of the most talked-about moments of the year so far occurred during the Davis Cup tie last weekend. After an apparent accidental collision between Bergs and Garin, the Chilean fell to the ground, complaining of dizziness, a headache, and an eye injury. As a result, he refused to return to the court and called for his opponent’s disqualification.

The umpire decided to give Bergs only a warning, and since Garin refused to resume play, he was handed three consecutive time violations, ultimately losing the match and eliminating Chile from the competition. The incident has sparked divided opinions in the following days, with both Bergs and Garin receiving criticism.

Now, Sam Querrey has weighed in on the debate during the Nothing Major podcast, taking aim at the former world No. 17 for what he saw as an exaggerated reaction. "That is so weak from [Cristian] Garin," Querrey said. "That is the most pathetic thing I have ever seen. That was like a South American, European football flop. That was the weakest thing I’ve ever seen from Garin."

Steve Johnson then joined the discussion, criticising the photo Garin later shared on social media, which showed swelling on his face. "They put the photo on Instagram after, it didn’t do him justice," Johnson remarked.

"Someone should have punched him to make it look better," he added. "It was just a little red. I think he should have got up and played, personally. Garin should be tough enough to go play."
