Oh Gael 💔 In visible pain in his wrist, @Gael_Monfils retires at 3-3 in the first set vs countryman Humbert #MiamiOpen
Gael Monfils battled compatriot Ugo Humbert in Miami but the French player retired only a handful of games due to an injury with his expression saying everything.
Monfils worked hard to nurse himself to full health for a return to tennis but it didn't last long as he only played two events before injuring himself once more. Injuries have been present in his career forever so it's nothing new for him but it's a shame for a player that is obviously on a fast track to retirement.
A proper fan favourite, Monfils was spotted in serious pain coming from his wrist early on in the match and despite trying to battle through it he eventually retired. It's unclear the extent of the injury but Monfils always spoke about how he'd like to finish off at the Olympics in Paris next year.. He'd certainly like to play at the event this year but wrist injuries can be tricky.
