"Long-term to feel better I will need surgery so I decided to do it. I'll be on crutches for many weeks and then also out of the game for many months. It's going to be difficult in some ways but it's the right thing to do. I wanna be healthy and I wanna give myself a glimmer of hope also to return to the tour."
It's devastating news for Federer and fans who had hoped the damage he sustained at Wimbledon was not as bad as it seemed to be. However positive faltered as time went on and Federer kept silent on the matter. The update is out, he will undergo surgery and miss several months of action.
No timetable has been set for his return however an appearance a the Australian Open looks unlikely. After his first knee surgery, Federer suffered a setback which prompted another minor surgery before returning in Doha over a year after the initial one. This will be his 3rd knee surgery.
