Camila Giorgi capped off a dream week in Montreal with her maiden WTA 1000 trophy at the National Bank Open formerly known as Rogers Cup.
For the 2nd time in less than a month, Giorgi proved better than
Karolina Pliskova besting the Czech player first at the Olympics and now in the National Bank Open final 6-4 7-5. This victory is much more significant for Giorgio as it's her biggest win over her career.
The first set started off nicely for Giorgio who proved more confident initially. The Italian was blasting winners at every chance she got and Pliskova did not have a counter ready. After fending off initial break points, Pliskova succumbed to the pressure getting broken twice in the final 3 games.
Giorgi finished off the set on a 4-0 run after trailing 3-2. The 2nd set followed a similar pattern as Giorgi once again proved better early. She took a 3-1 lead but a lapse in focus gave the break back to Pliskova. After that, she settled a bit countering Giorgi much better than before.
At 5-6, the Italian played some stellar points to create two match points. Pliskova saved the first one but failed to save the 2nd one. A marvellous week for Giorgi in Montreal for whom this is her first WTA 1000 trophy. Pliskova will leave the court after losing yet another final in 2021.
