Casper Ruud is never one usually to get frustrated or get angry on court, but it wasn't anything to do with his on court play this time around as he vented to the chair umpire hitting out at the Miami Open tournament organisers. Not happy with the treatment of players including himself, he hit out as he narrowly defeated Luca van Assche.
Ruud narrowly won the opening set 7-6(5), Van Assche battled back to win the second 6-1 before the Norwegian again turned the tables to seal the final set 6-1. He confronted the chair umpire during the tie about standards expressing his discontent at the lack of towels, water and seating for kit changes.
With Miami being known for its high humidity especially after two days of rain as well as the wind, the conditions seemed to be bothering him so not having adequate conditions was the final straw.
"There's been no towels, no cold water, and just a plastic chair to change. This is a joke. And you know why it is, because the tournament is too cheap to put up something good for the players. The players come here every year to play, to put on a show in front of tens of thousands of people and then they treat us like this," he said.
"Go to trailer for five minutes in a room with nothing and just a plastic chair to change. Maybe they can put some towels, maybe some cold water for the players' comfort. And it's not your fault. I'm just saying how bad it is. No, I know you didn't know but I'm telling you now. And you have to take it on today to whoever is charge, Andrea, Massimo, whoever. Because every time the players complain, nothing happens," he added stating that complaints have seemingly been put in before but not heard.
