Serbia and Spain have been drawn in the same group for this year's
Davis Cup Finals and make a Nadal - Djokovic matchup in a final unlikely.
Nadal and Djokovic have been two of the standout performers this year as they combined to win all three grand slams played so far. Both of them are likely to play at the Davis Cup Finals at the end of the year as well however we most likely won't see them face each other in the final. Davis Cup assistant director Francisco Clavet explained:
"There are very good players in all countries, although not all of them
have superstars like Spain (Nadal) or Serbia (Djokovic), but it is
promoted through the format that this upper-middle class achieves
results. And you have to add double, which is of vital importance. If you have a
good double, you have won a lot. Thus, it is nice, it creates
uncertainty and the same ones do not always win. It is good for the
sport."
The nations will play each other in the group stage in Valencia however one of them might drop out because of the competition. They will play with South Korea and Canada with the latter capable of fielding a very strong field. Clavet concluded with:
"We would all love to have a Nadal-Djokovic, but it's frankly difficult."
