During his lengthy career, Juan Martin Del Potro triumphed once at the Abierto Mexicano Acapulco, back in 2018 and tournament director, Raul Zurutuza invited the tall Argentinian to compete also in 2023.
Despite playing the last event in Buenos Aires in February this year, Juan Martin Del Potro never officially ended his career. The 2009 US Open champion played only one match since June 2019 and after losing in his home country, it seems that his career is over.
However, since he never officially said goodbye to the ATP Tour, some tournament directors would still want to see him at their event. And so does Raul Zurutuza, who invited Juan Martin Del Potro to end his career at the 2023 Acapulco Open.
"I believe that these characters with such a high level of tennis need two or three weeks to catch up and then work; it's not that they start from scratch. Obviously the skills are different, it will no longer be so fast, but he will be able to give good games," Zurutuza told EFE.
"The message for Juan Martín, and he knows it well, is that this is his home and we would love to see him again in Acapulco; it would be wonderful. Hopefully he will be encouraged, although we must wait to see what he decides with his life."
