Australian legendary tennis star
Rod Laver believes that
America’s
Ben Shelton has all the tools to win a Grand Slam in the future.
The 20-year-old is one of the most highly-rated players in
the circuit and has showcased his talent at the highest level.
The former world number one Laver was quoted in a report
recently where he backed Shelton to win a major tournament, sooner than later.
"Shelton is the new player on the tour,” said the
11-time Grand Slam winner. “We'll see him win a Slam, he has one of the
greatest serves, he's a great lefty, he doesn't make many mistakes. He sees an
opening and exploits it."
Shelton justified the hype surrounding his talent in the
recently concluded US Open where his journey finally came to an end after losing
to the current world number one and 24-time Grand Slam winner Serbia’s Novak
Djokovic in the semifinal with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6.
After that, the Atlanta-born also delivered the good on the
court during the recently concluded Laver Cup where he played a huge role in
the success of Team World.
Before the semifinal appearance in the US Open, Shelton also
played in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open earlier in the year where he
lost to fellow American Tommy Paul with a score of 7-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
