Daniil Medvedev faced Hugo Gaston in a very hostile environment in Paris but the Russian remained calm under pressure winning in two sets.
It was an interesting match between Daniil Medvedev and Hugo Gaston in Paris. The French player was playing the best tennis of his life at this event and that continued against Medvedev. Gaston held firm to shake of initial nerves only to be in a position to win the first set. Serving for it, he had a 40-0 lead before losing that game and the first set in a tie tiebreak.
On mounting a comeback in a very hostile einvroment Medvedev said:
“When [the atmosphere] is against you, you need to face it. You need to try to win no matter what. Even when it is against me, I think, 'Well, I will try to beat my opponent and the crowd' because there is no other choice. I am kind of happy about myself, but it was definitely a high-level match.”
Medvedev jumped out to a big 4-0 lead in the 2nd set but Gaston was able to mount a bit of a comeback to make it 4-3. The Russian did not fall apart under the tremendous pressure created by the crowd and after the match, he cracked a bit of smile as he said:
“I am kind of happy about myself, but it was definitely a high-level match."
It doesn't get any easier for Medvedev as the Russian is set to face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals today.
