Jannik Sinner was pleased after his victory over Ben Shelton at Wimbledon and asserted that it is the 'most special tournament' of the year. The World No. 1 advanced to the tournament semifinals for the second time in his career and awaits his opponent between Novak Djokovic and his compatriot Flavio Cobolli.
The three-time Grand Slam champion secured a straight-sets victory, where the American was tougher than the result suggests. Shelton pushed Sinner to the limit, but the Italian prevailed in crucial moments, showcasing his class and greater experience at this stage.
After the match, Sinner commented on Wimbledon being a special tournament for him. "I remember the first time playing on Centre Court, I do remember the first time playing semifinals here, and it’s very very special, so I’m of course looking forward to it, but in the other way I believe, especially when you are young – 20, 22, 23, 24 – one year makes such a difference, because you get more into big stages, you get used to it,”
“It’s always feeling so special and so amazing, Wimbledon is the most special tournament we have throughout the calendar," he added. "Being again in the last four here means a lot to me, and hopefully it’s gonna be a good match the next one.”
Sinner secured a hard-fought victory in 2 hours and 21 minutes, with statistics that are promising for his title chances. He won 89% of points on his first serve and 67% on his second. He only had one game where he faced trouble with two break points against him, though he saved both. The Italian did not suffer any breaks while converting 2 out of 5 break chances Shelton gave him.
Jannik Sinner will seek to reach his fifth Grand Slam final when he steps onto the court this Friday, against the winner between Djokovic and Cobolli.
