Novak
Djokovic trained with
Andy Murray, the only player in the draw who has defeated
him at
Wimbledon.
With the
main draw sorted and just a day before the competition begins, the two
Wimbledon champions practiced together on the London grass. Images of Novak
Djokovic and Andy Murray training on the grass courts were shared on social
media.
These
tennis legends have faced each other 36 times, with Djokovic leading the
head-to-head 25-11. However, Murray claimed victory in both matches played on
grass.
The first
encounter took place at the 2012 London Olympics, where Murray reached the
final with a 7-5, 7-5 win and eventually won the gold medal. A year later, they
met again in the final of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, where the British
player secured his second Grand Slam title by defeating Djokovic in three sets.
It was the same opponent Murray defeated to win his first Slam at the 2012 US
Open.
In the 2013
Wimbledon final, Djokovic was the top seed and Murray was the second seed. Both
players reached the final after early-round exits by Rafael Nadal and Roger
Federer. Murray emerged victorious in three sets (6-4, 7-5, 6-4) after three
hours and nine minutes of play. With this win, Murray became the first British
player to win the Wimbledon title since 1936 and the first Scot since Harold
Moahony in 1896.
Murray had
a successful grass court season in the past month, winning two Challenger
tournaments. However, he suffered a first-round defeat at the Queen's Club
Championship against Alex de Minaur. In the first round of Wimbledon, Murray
will face his compatriot Ryan Peniston, who received a wild card from the
organization. If he wins, Murray could potentially face the winner of the
thrilling match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem.
On the
other hand, Djokovic will face Argentine Pedro Cachín in the first round. If he
secures a victory, he would then face the winner of the match between Brandon
Nakashima and Jordan Thompson in the second round.
