Matteo Berrettini is having a horror season and it continued even on grass, one of his favourite surfaces where he excelled in the few previous years.
The Italian stood in the Wimbledon final at one point taking on Novak Djokovic trying to win that iconic trophy. He failed but promised himself to return there one day but it doesn't look like that will happen this year. The Italian struggled with injuries for a while with his confidence struggling as a consequence as well.
His results have been quite poor this year with only 17 matches and nine wins in those 17 matches. He's also dealt with some private issues due to his new relationship becoming a rotating topic in newspapers ensuring a certain dose of hate on social media. He's just seen better days generally and it's an unfortunate thing for the Italian as this is the part of the season which he loves so very much.
He was set to defend his trophy in Stuttgart but got beaten in the opening round leaving the court in tears. His title defence at the Cinch Championships won't be happening either as he withdrew leading up to the event. The Italian didn't specify any reason but fans are hopeful that Wimbledon is still in play.
Due to the recent happenings, Berrettini has now left the top 30 occupying number 34 on the latest rankings. It's a terrible thing for the Italian, a tough reality that he needs to face but also something he needs to stop from escalating. The more he drops the tougher it will be to be back. It's a process though, something he knows very well:
"I have worked extremely hard to recover from my latest injury, and to not have the dream return like I had last year is difficult to process. But I need to be realistic, my best level will take time and matches. I am putting in the work and the results will follow.
