With the clock ticking on the era of the Big Three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, tennis commentator Robbie Koenig believes
Jannik Sinner has stepped up at the right moment to fill that void.
Sinner has been playing some of the best tennis of his career over the past few months, finishing runner-up at the Nitto ATP Finals last year before defeating World No.1 Novak Djokovic en route to capturing the Davis Cup for Team Italy. The 22-year old added the cherry on top by winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2024
Australian Open, defeating Djokovic in the semifinal and Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling final.
Koenig full of praise for Sinner's ascension
Although Djokovic is still going strong at age 36, Nadal is currently battling injuries whereas Federer retired in 2022. With the Big Three era inevitably coming to an end, Koenig believes Sinner has what it takes to be a great ambassador for the sport.
"A young kid who believes so much in the process and is always looking to get better, always add to his game," said Koenig on an episode of the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast. "Even if it was at the expense of losing. I can't applaud the guy enough. What an amazing young man. And just when we were worried about whether tennis would be in good hands in the post-Big 3 era, we couldn't ask for a better ambassador."
