Roger
Federer shared his insights on what he believes is necessary to become a
professional tennis player.
In a
conversation with GQ magazine, the former world No. 1 discussed his perspective
on the keys to becoming a professional tennis player. As one of the most
successful tennis players of all time, Federer acknowledged that everything
wasn't always perfect for him, but he emphasized the importance of having a
good team and supportive loved ones.
For the
Swiss tennis legend, one of the secrets to his success has been having his
wife, Mirka Federer, by his side for so many years, as well as the support of
his family and friends:
“A big will
& a great team. You usually have several coaches throughout your life &
career. You need someone who trains you as a baby to motivate you to go to the
court at all. Then you need one for your youthful recklessness & one who
knows you, your strengths & weaknesses as a young adult, & who
continues to promote & challenge you,” Federer said.
“You should
have people around you who you like. After all, you travel a lot during a
career, often only surrounded by your own team. You are tired, homesick, &
maybe just struggling with an injury. You need support. You shouldn't be afraid
of the big courts. You have to see yourself playing there again & again,
like in a kind of vision. Until it becomes a reality. I think, we lose a lot of
talented young players on this long way to the top,” 8-times Wimbledon champion
said.
At 42 years
old and more than a year into his retirement, Federer has been keeping busy off
the tennis court. In his first year as a retired tennis player, he has been
involved in various events and tributes, both in tennis tournaments and in the
world of fashion and his various businesses.
He recently
led the Laver Cup event, of which he is a co-creator, and for the first time he
didn't participate as a player.
