Alexander Zverev kept German hopes alive with a win against Norrie while De Minaur did the same for Australia against Berrettini at the ATP Cup.
A couple of big names played at the ATP Cup today with Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini in action. The top names of their nations had mixed success on the court as one won while the other lost. Alexander Zverev had all the pressure on him when he faced Cameron Norrie in Sydney. The British team was up 1-0 after Evans smashed Struff earlier and Zverev needed to win this one.
He delivered early as he narrowly won the first set with 7-2 in the tiebreak giving himself a lead. In the 2nd set, he relaxed even more and completely smashed Norrie whose fairly weak backhand got exposed. Zverev finished it off with 6-1 leveling the tie at 1-1. The doubles are coming up next and they should be good.
In another match, Matteo Berrettini had the chance to close it out for Italy who was up 1-0 against Australia. Jannik Sinner got the first point with a dominating win over Purcell but Berrettini was not able to get it done. Facing a very upbeat De Minaur the Italian showed signs of major rust playing in his first competitive match in several weeks.
His forehand was misfiring and his serve was not able to keep De Minaur away from break points. De Minaur complicated things towards the end of the match when he missed a chance to close it out early. He served for the match at 5-4 but lost his serve. He rallied in time to win in the tiebreak. The doubles will decide this tie as well.
