Madison Keys overcame a leg injury to seal her ninth WTA title winning the Australian Open pre cursor, the Adelaide International 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 against Jessica Pegula.

Keys played a 30 minute opening set claiming it with relative ease with breaks when she needed them. But after Pegula won the first three games of the second set, Keys took an MTO returning with tapered on her leg.

But while there can be doubts ahead of the Australian Open due to her injury, Keys rolled through her service games in the next set and claimed the only break she needed to seal the win.

It was a calm, confident and composed display from Keys who was playing one of her best friends in claiming her first title of the year. For Pegula despite defeat, it’s a confident start to the season.

She had gone from withdrawing from Brisbane with injury to reaching the final in Adelaide and now goes into the Australian Open more confident.

"I haven't been back since 2022," Keys told the crowd on court, "and I was lucky enough to lift the trophy then and now I'm back and I'm holding it once again, so I'm thinking I should just keep coming back to Adelaide. I clearly do well here."

"Jessie, amazing playing. Way to come out of the gates first week of the year and make the finals. We can discuss the match later when we're flying together, if you want."
