Gael
Monfils and
Elina Svitolina competed in a Cornhole game, showcasing their great
competitive spirit.
The
relationship between Svitolina and Monfils began in 2018, and they got married
in 2021. They also have a daughter, Ska Monfils, who was born in October 2022.
The couple
shared a video on social media, where they playfully competed in a Cornhole
game. Svitolina cheered loudly every time she made a good shot, which amused
the 36-year-old tennis player.
“It’s
incredible she talks to me while I’m playing it drives me crazy,” joked Monfils
at the beginning of the video.
“I have
never seen a cheater like this what it’s still incredible,” he continued.
Monfils
returned to the ATP tour last week at the Atlanta Open, after being forced to
miss the French Open and the grass-court season, including Wimbledon. Despite a
first-round loss to Thanasi Kokkinakis in Atlanta, the Frenchman showed good
form, pushing the match to a third-set tiebreak before falling 6-1, 3-6, 6-7.
This week
at the ATP 500 Washington Open, Monfils proved that he still has the rhythm to
compete, advancing two rounds with victories over Bjorn Fratangelo and sixth
seed Aleksander Bublik before losing to the tournament finalist Griekspoor.
As for
Svitolina, she also had a great week in Washington, maintaining the level she
has shown in recent months. She defeated Victoria Azarenka and Daria Kasatkina
but fell in the quarterfinals to the first seed Jessica Pegula in three sets.
The tennis
couple will now compete in the Canadian Open, with the ATP event taking place
in Toronto and the WTA event in Montreal. Svitolina was drawn to face a
qualifier in the first round, and if she advances, the eighth seed Maria
Sakkari awaits her in the second round.
On the
other hand, Monfils will start his campaign against the American Christopher
Eubanks. The Frenchman will be defending the points he earned in the 2022
edition, where he reached the third round before retiring against Jack Draper
in his last match of the season.
