The
independent tribunal reviewing
Simona Halep's doping case has provided an
update on the verdict date.
Former
world No. 1, Simona Halep, has been under suspension since August of last year.
After her first-round exit at the
US Open against Daria Snigur, it was
announced that she had tested positive in one of the anti-doping exams.
The
independent tribunal in London, Sports Resolutions, has delayed the verdict on
Simona Halep's case. The tennis player has repeatedly denied any deliberate
consumption of prohibited substances.
Halep
publicly requested to be heard, as months passed without her being able to
present her evidence before a tribunal. The Romanian press contacted Sports
Resolutions, who provided updated details about the case.
"As an
independent tribunal, we are unable to comment on any aspect of our cases,
whether proceedings have concluded or are ongoing.
We take
this approach on all cases that come to us. Thank you for your understanding
and we apologize that we cannot provide you with more details at this time.”
"She
was heard today, but she will be heard tomorrow as well. In about two weeks we
should have a first verdict. The moment that was delayed has happened. Together
with the lawyers, Simona presented her arguments. We will see what the decisions
will be.
“Generally,
two-year suspensions are given here, then the decisions are appealed to the
Court of Arbitration for Sport. They are generally halved there. The term of
provisional suspension is reduced, and that provisional suspension is from
November 2022,"
Simona
Halep appeared on the entry list for the 2023 US Open, precisely the tournament
where she played her last match before the suspension. Although fans were
hopeful about the return of the 2-time Grand Slam champion in New York, the
organization clarified that her participation depends on the sanction she
receives, which could be announced in the coming weeks.
