"There is no envy" says Matteo Berrettini on compatriot Jannik Sinner's recent success compared to himself

Italy’s Matteo Berrettini has heaped praise on fellow
countryman Jannik Sinner after his heroics in the ongoing Davis Cup.
The 22-year-old has played a big role in helping Italy to qualify
for the final of the Davis Cup where they will face Australia in the final. The
side managed to defeat Serbia in the semifinal.
In that victory, it was Sinner’s win over the world number
one Novak Djokovic which proved to be the turning point. He ended up defeating
the top-ranked player in the world with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
Berrettini was recently quoted in a report where he heaped
praise on the current world number four. "I always knew Jannik would do
all this. It's something he feels when he plays with a top-level tennis player,”
he said.
“His growth was only a matter of time. The conditions in
Turin, and indoor tournaments in general, are his own. He demonstrated this
from an early age. He is behind Novak on the fast track.
There is no envy. It's a question of healthy
competitiveness. I define it as I believe he used it in previous years. He
impressed me with how quickly he has improved and he is certainly a great
incentive to put myself in and work.
Matteo, who has not been selected in Italy’s squad for the
Davis Cup Finals, expressed his disappointment but also stated that he is there
to support the team.
"I certainly would have liked to be there. I would have
liked to be at the Finals,” he said. “More than anything else, enjoy them as he
enjoyed them. The Turin episode was the biggest disappointment, looking back,
of my career. I had had a very, very positive season and I wasn't able to enjoy
the crowd and all the emotion of that very special tournament."
