Australian
Davis Cup captain
Lleyton Hewitt expressed the opinion that
Novak Djokovic and
Jannik Sinner could win several Grand Slam titles in doubles if they played
together.
The former
world No. 1 is having a great week as the captain of the Australian team in the
Davis Cup Finals. The Australian team defeated Finland 2-0, with victories from
the world No. 40 Alexei Popyrin over Otto Virtanen (7-6, 6-2) and team leader
world No. 12 Alex de Minaur over Emil Ruusuvuori (6-4, 6-3).
They became
the first finalists of the tournament, so Captain Lleyton Hewitt analyzed who
would compete for the second spot in the final: Italy and Serbia, led by the
top year-end tennis players Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic.
"Yeah,
it's a tough one. You know, obviously, we know Novak [Djokovic] and Jannik
[Sinner] are quality players. Doesn't matter if they play singles or doubles.
We saw that with Jannik yesterday helping Italy go through."
Even though
it's not common to see them on the ATP Tour with a partner, both Sinner and
Djokovic have participated in doubles matches and contributed to their teams'
progress:
"So
doesn't surprise me, though. You know, if the best guys, best singles players
in the world, played doubles week in and week out in all the Majors, they would
win plenty," Hewitt said.
"So
it's more about who they match up with, I guess. That's a telling factor. Both
teams have options I think with who they play together," he added.
"And
then I've got full confidence in my boys. They know what they're doing on a
doubles court. Yeah, I'd have a lot of belief putting them out against anybody,
2-times Grand Slam champion concluded."
On
Saturday, in an exciting series, Italy secured their spot as the second
finalist team. In the first match, Miomir Kecmanovic defeated Lorenzo Musetti
(6-7, 6-2, 6-1), and in the second match, Jannik Sinner avenged the ATP Finals
defeat by overcoming Djokovic (6-2, 2-6, 7-5). In the decisive doubles match,
Lorenzo Sonego teamed up with Sinner, defeating Djokovic and Kecmanovic's pair.
