Bautista Agut on how loss of parents affected his career: “These tough moments made me stronger and more powerful. It gave me a strength others did not have”

Behind Roberto Bautista Agut who has won seven of his nine ATP titles in the past three years and is a main fixture in the top ten is someone who has had to deal with his fair share of loss and pain.
The Spaniard spoke to Behind the Racquet and derailed the influence his parents who passed away within a year of each other have had on him as a player.
He admitted that it has given him a new born strength which he brings into court and that he does it for them.
“My parents wanted me to make my dreams come true no matter the situation. I kept playing and fought harder than I ever did. That was my way of making it worth it. I played some of my best tennis during this horrible time. I was there for my family as much as I could, but I could not throw away what I have worked all my life for. I wanted to keep working, and harded than ever”.
“These tough moments made me stronger and more powerful. It gave me a strength others did not have. Through all the tough times I had at home and did not want to travel because I was so tired, it made me more focused and motivated. I did everything I could to fight hard on the court to show my mother and father that the hard work was worth it”.

- Having spent weeks and weeks through the years on tour, I can say with confidence that Conchita was (is) one of the very few who realize the surprising level of maturity (and sometimes lack of) which Mirra seems to have developed in such a demanding adult world of Pro-Tennis. While at the same time reminding herself (Conchita, that is) that Mirra is still young and developing mentally and physically. The general public may forget at times, or not at all realize, these modern era young athletes do not have a 'normal' Youth. It's a major sacrifice, among countless sacrifices, these athletes must make.
