Dayana Yastremska shows footage of damaged family apartment following latest Russian attack

Dayana Yastremska has been left heartbroken following a Russian missile that directly hit her apartment building that belonged to her family in Odessa, Ukraine.

The multi-storey residential building was heavily damaged following the latest Russian strikes on the city. Yastremska has come out of the incident unscathed by the looks of it, but the emotional toll it would have taken on her would be astronomical.

This follows events that occurred on New Year's Eve of 2024 when Yastremska said that the house where her grandmother lived was also damaged. This showcases the dangerous reality tennis players from Ukraine have to put up with, whether they or their families.

She unveiled the news on her Instagram story while filming numerous shots from outside the building her family once called home, revealing the extent of the wreckage.

“This night... This apartment belonged to OUR FAMILY,” she wrote. “This is what the ‘Russian world’ looks like. A direct hit from a Kalibr missile.”

A panned video of the inside showcased a sorry sight. A barren and wrecked scene with rocks covering the floor with the roof and walls obliterated in some areas. Workers trying to salvage the situation were working simultaneously.

Yastremska had returned from an uneventful North American hardcourt swing, first round defeats at the Cincinnati Open, Monterrey and most recently the US Open signalling a disappointing return to North America as she looked to reset ahead of the Asian swing. It will be hard to get herself in the right mental capacity to compete on court following the events that have just happened.

This is not the only news from the Ukraine war that has been linked to tennis. On September 8, a padel club belonging to Elina Svitolina and Sergiy Stakhovsky was badly damaged in Kyiv after a separate Russian attack.

On Instagram, Svitolina released a message updating the situation. "The SVITO space suffered from an explosive wave as a result of a night attack. No people were hurt, and that's what matters most. Our team is already working to eliminate all consequences, and we will further inform once the club is fully ready to resume operations. We will be in touch further with anyone who has bookings. Our sincere condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones this night and are affected. Stay safe out there!"

The co-founders are both prominent figures in the tennis world as well as Ukraine tennis who have brought up a number of talents in the sport, especially on the WTA Tour, with the likes of Marta Kostyuk and Oleksandra Oliynykova making an impression.

However, time and time again they are brought back to reality with more important events happening in their lives as they in turn try to compete on the big stage in front of thousands of tennis fans.
