The Australian Open champion recently donated one million Euros for the purchase of medical equipment in his home country of Serbia. It seems his philanthropic exploits have now gone beyond his native borders, as it was revealed that he donated an undisclosed sum to hospitals in Bergamo, Italy.
Bergamo is one of the cities that have been hit hardest by the coronavirus outbreak, reporting over 60,000 positive cases and 11,000 deaths. The Bergamo hospital director disclosed Djokovic's contributions to the hospitals of Treviglio-Caravaggio and Romani di Lombardia. The funds will be allocated to the purchase of ventilators and other essential medical equipment.
"I never expected to see such a high donation in my bank account, even from such an important person." said Peter Assembergs, CEO of ASTT Bergamo Ovest. "As I read that one of the donors is Novak Djokovic, I reacted emotionally".
Furthermore, the World No.1 included an encouraging message with his gift.
"Dear Italy, even if you are going through a very difficult period, know that you are not alone in this situation. We support you and send you our love, our prayers and wish you to remain strong to face and overcome these difficult days. Stay strong, courageous, confident, healthy and united. Everything will be fine." wrote Djokovic in the message.
