It was the third doubles match at the Match in Africa and the third victory for Roger Federer. In 2017, the Swiss teamed up with Bill Gates for the first time when they defeated John Isner and Mike McCready. In 2018, The Swiss tennis player and American billionaire defeated Jack Sock and Savannah Guthrie and this year they faced Rafael Nadal and Trevor Noah.
Federer and Gates faced breakpoints already in the third game. However, they turned them away to go for the first victory of the night in Cape Town. 'Gateserer' as they started to call them on social media defeated Nadal & Noah 6-3. After the match, Federer said:
"Gateserer for social media. That is our nickname, I know not everybody is familiar with that. When you are winning doubles in Match for Africa you need to start getting it trending on social media. We've won the last 2, now the last 3."
"Trevor thank you very very much for coming to Cape Town and supporting the foundation and being here tonight. You are the best, thank you!"
Next, Federer will meet Nadal in a singles match. The 20-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland was successful in all of his previous 5 appearances when he defeated Nadal, Wawrinka, Murray, Isner, and Sock.
