Taylor
Fritz and
Aryna Sabalenka participated in a joint interview where they
discussed trash-talk just before the start of the US Open.
Amid the
Cincinnati Open, Sabalenka and Fritz came together to discuss the tennis
documentary series "Break Point," which is available on Netflix. Both
players appeared in Part 2 of the first season of the series.
During the
interview, in addition to reflecting on some moments from the series, Fritz and
Sabalenka shared their thoughts on the topic of trash-talk among tennis
players. This subject has been a topic of debate in recent times.
"Absolutely,
I think there should be but it can't be fake. I'd get along with everybody. So
it's like I don't know who I'd trash talk (laughing). It's not bad for like the
entertainment aspect of the sport, but it has to be real," said Fritz
about trash-talking.
"It
should be natural. Yeah, I don't know, but it has to be with some kind of respect,"
added Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff
and Pegula in favor of trash-talk.
The topic
was previously supported by
Coco Gauff and
Jessica Pegula during the
"Sunshine Double" tournaments.
"There
could be more banter here and there. So long as you don't take it personally.
You see in basketball, guys go at each other and then they go out for a drink
afterward. I think it would make the sport interesting. I think this is
something that would bring more fans in. Pretty much every other sport has it.
In college tennis they trash talk a lot," world No. 6 Coco Gauff said.
"The
guys will tell us, 'Oh I said this to him when we changed sides.' Guys are just
better at having fun with it. With the girls, it gets too personal. I don't know
why. I think it would be fun," Pegula opined.
