French tennis player
Lucas Pouille has stated that he has no
problem with the gender of his coach. The 30-year-old worked with Amelie
Mauresmo, who also worked with the former world number one
Andy Murray in the
past, in the 2019 season.
While working with Mauresmo, Murray had a relatively
successful time from 2014 to 2016 as he lifted two ATP 1000 titles in Madrid and
Montreal. Pouille had a relatively successful time working with Mauresmo as he
produced his best outing in a Grand Slam as he played in the semifinal of the
Australian Open in 2019 where he lost to Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak
Djokovic in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.
Pouille has recently spoken to Clay where he stated that Mauresmo
was the right coach for him. The former world number 10 was of the opinion that
he has no problem with the gender of the coach and that his primary objective
has been to hire someone who can help him improve his game. Pouille also remains
optimistic that there will be more women coaches working in men’s tennis in the
near future.
"I don't know
why it's not common,” he said. “For me it doesn't matter if it's a man or a
woman. It's only about knowledge, and for me, Amelie was the right person at
that time. She brought something extra to my tennis. I don't care about the
gender of the members of my work team. I just want people who are able to bring
me good things to my game, to my career, positive energy and positive mindset.
A winning mindset. Amelie had everything, so for me she was definitely the
right coach. Maybe we'll see more and more women coming soon. "But it's
true that on the opposite way doesn't happen like that. In the WTA Tour there
are a lot of men coaching women, but not a lot of women coaching men, so maybe
that will change.”
