The former tennis player attained the No. 1 ranking in the world in 2005, won 5 Grand Slam titles, and is widely regarded as an icon of world tennis. At the age of just 17, she achieved worldwide recognition by defeating tennis legend Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final and went on to become one of the most prominent figures in the WTA throughout the rest of her career.
Maria Sharapova is one of the few players who won all four Grand Slam tournaments during her career in the Open Era, alongside Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams. A Twitter user recalled the date on which the Russian announced her retirement.
