The Canadian Open saw mixed results for the Americans in Toronto and Montreal. Madison Keys was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Clara Tauson, leaving the women's draw without any Americans. Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz became the first male semifinalist, and he is awaiting the possibility of his compatriot Ben Shelton joining him.
Keys could not do much against the Danish player Clara Tauson, who had a phenomenal 6-1, 6-4 victory in just one hour and 13 minutes, where she was always in control of the match. On the other hand, Fritz continues to play at an impeccable level and had no problems dispatching Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(4), reaching his second Masters 1000 semifinal of the season.

Clara Tauson knocks out Madison Keys

At the beginning, everything seemed even, and even slightly in Keys' favor, who had a couple of break points in the first game but could not convert them. Both players held their first service games and the score was tied, but things quickly began to lean in favor of the Dane, who was impeccable with her serve from then on.
The 2025 Australian Open champion was especially hesitant with her serve, winning only 44% of her first-serve points, compared to her opponent's 79%. Tauson dominated on the return and got a couple of consecutive breaks that gave her the set 6-1 without problems in just 28 minutes.
In the second set, Tauson quickly took advantage of the momentum to get her third consecutive break and go up 2-0 with her serve. Tauson totaled six consecutive games, taking advantage of a long stretch of the match where Keys' errors made it difficult for her to keep up with her opponent.
Keys, however, corrected her errors and managed to break her opponent's winning streak to get on the board at 1-2 with her serve. Although the American managed to hold her serve for the rest of the set, she squandered the only break opportunity she had in her favor. Tauson remained firm on her serve and ended up closing out the victory 6-1, 6-4, guaranteeing her spot in the semifinals and also ensuring her entry into the top 15 for the first time once the tournament is over.

Taylor Fritz handles Rublev to become the first American semifinalist

It was a match that initially seemed even, as Fritz faced a top-20 player for the first time in the hardcourt swing. The American was not intimidated by his opponent's rank and got an early break, in addition to a couple of good service games that put him comfortably ahead 3-0 in the initial part of the match.
Fritz followed the game plan perfectly: he waited for his opportunities and stayed ahead with good service games. Rublev never got a break chance, and Fritz ended up closing out the set 6-3, winning 74% of his first-serve points and 60% of his second-serve points.
In the second set, both players won more than 80% of their first-serve points and more than 60% of their second-serve points, making it almost impossible for either to get opportunities. The score reached 4-4 without either player doing any damage on the return. Fritz got the break and had the opportunity to serve for the match with the score at 5-4 in his favor, but nerves got the best of him. He missed a match point, and Rublev got the break on his fourth chance.
After being tied, the set went to a tie-break, in which Fritz got a mini-break on the first point and held on to his advantage. The American did not concede a single point on his serve and ended up closing out the victory 6-3, 7-6, showing that he can handle the tension in these types of situations. He now awaits his opponent between Alex de Minaur and his compatriot Ben Shelton.
