Tennis fans have been debating the extent of Holger Rune's potential success under the tutelage of his new coach Boris Becker.
The World No. 6 Rune has been struggling a lot as of late. Over the summer, he was defeated in the first round of every tournament he played in, including the US Open. This continued onto the Asian Swing, where he won only one match before crashing out in the opening round in Stockholm.
However, in an effort to turn his fortunes around, Rune called on the help of six-time Grand Slam champion Becker, who announced recently that he will coach the Dane for the rest of 2023. In the wake of this revelation, fans have been debating whether or not the 55-year-old will indeed help the 20-year-old to reach his full potential.
Fans have mixed predictions about success of collaboration
"In your opinion, will Boris Becker be able to help Holger Rune reach his full potential and lead him to win AT LEAST one Major title in the coming years?" asked Relevant Tennis on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Some fans were optimistic and expressed their hopes for the collaboration to be productive.
"Too soon to tell but Becker was an exceptional player, coached the best player that ever played and Holger has massive potential. So it should go well, let's see," wrote one.
"To soon to make a judgment on a player coach relationship but Holger is very talented and he just needs a team that supports him in a way that he flourishes with. He could easily win grand slam tournaments because he is still very young," added another.
"Full potential would be more than 1 major," commented a third.
Meanwhile, others were more doubtful about whether the coaching situation would produce positive results.
"No, Rune is impatient and wants results immediately. I do not believe that their cooperation will last long," wrote one.
Another fan referred to Rune's mother and manager Aneke, saying she would need to have less of an influence for it to work.
"Coaching is about communication. Will depend on how Becker conveys information and how receptive Rune is to receiving it. Mommy will need to step aside and let this relationship develop."
"Let’s hope holger is physically healthy. Then if he is, we’ll see how this partnership progress. Because adding someone new to the team it takes time to get result. In the beginning always rosy and fun. And holger is “raw” talent it needs more than bringing super coach," commented another fan.
