While Coco Gauff became known to the wider tennis public with 2019 Wimbledon run not many are aware of her off-court activism as well. She is doing all of that at the mere age of 16 which is admirable in itself. In a wide-ranging interview with TelegraphWomen's Sport Sharapova spoke about Gauff and her impact. She said:
“I remember when I was 13 years old, Billie Jean King came up to me for the very first time. Whatever you do does not just shape your path, but it shapes the path of the generation to come. At the time, [it] didn’t resonate. But I think Coco’s doing an incredible job of that – she’s using her platform to make a difference. I admire her a lot.”
Gauff was one of the most vocal players on the tour regarding the social justice movement in the USA and she delivered a heartfelt speech during one of the rallies held in Delray Beach earlier this year.
