The wildcards for the 2025 French Open have been announced, with the inclusion of the 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka, as well as the French veteran Richard Gasquet. This Tuesday, the organization revealed the 8 male and 8 female names that will join their respective main draws, with a predominance of local players.
As is customary at Roland Garros, the vast majority of the invitees are local players, with 11 of the 16 invitees being of French nationality. The organization also has agreements with Tennis Australia and the USTA to reserve a spot for an American player and an Australian player in each draw.
With this, the only exception to the usual criteria is the inclusion of the 3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss player competed in Roland Garros for the first time in 2005 and has been in the draw ever since, with the sole exception of 2021, when an injury kept him off the courts for a year.
Wawrinka has a great 46-18 record in the tournament, with the title won in 2015 as his best result, defeating Roger Federer along the way and Novak Djokovic in the final. Two years later, he reached the final but fell decisively to the king of Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal.
On the other hand, Gasquet, one of the most prominent French players of the last two decades, has his best result at Roland Garros being the quarterfinals in 2016, where he was eliminated by the eventual finalist Andy Murray.
On the women's side, notable inclusions are the 22-year-old player Diane Parry (No. 105) and Leolia Jeanjean (No. 103), both of whom have reached the third round of the tournament in previous years and are the French No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. Currently, the French No. 1 is Varvara Gracheva, 24 years old (No. 77), who qualified directly for the main draw, in addition to Caroline Garcia, who despite recently dropping in the ranking to No. 140, had an entry ranking of No. 102 at the time of the entry list announcement.
