Elina Svitolina put her husband
Gael Monfils' tennis skills to the test as they practiced at the
DC Open.
Former world No. 3 Svitolina defeated former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka for the second time in the space of a few weeks during her opening round at the
WTA 500 event.
Despite their match in the fourth round of Wimbledon going to three sets, the Ukrainian player dominated in Washington, winning against the two-time Australian Open champion in straight sets.
Meanwhile, her husband Gael Monfils also had a successful start to his run at the
ATP 500 event. The Frenchman defeated Bjorn Fratangelo 6-3, 6-4 to progress to the second round.
Pair working together to improve
The couple started dating back in 2019 and got married in July 2021. Almost a year later, Svitolina announced that she was pregnant with their first child, and the pair welcomed their daughter Skaï in October 2022.
In 2023, the 28-year-old returned to the WTA Tour, and the pair have both been playing again since, with Svitolina making it all the way to the semi-final of Wimbledon where she was defeated by eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova.
Now a video has emerged of the couple on the court together, as Svitolina hits ace after ace at her husband. In the video, the pair are seen laughing as Svitolina shouts "I got you!" and Monfils jokes that "the first one [...] was completely lucky."
She then attempts to get five aces against the former world No. 6, and eventually declares "5 times is impossible!"
Following her first-match victory at the Citi Open, Svitolina spoke of how the pair manage their relationship when playing at the same tournament,
"We talk time to time. Depends which mood we’re in. We both play tennis at such a high level. So tennis is a big part of our life."
