The third round of
Wimbledon is underway with Australian action vying for a spot in the fourth round. Unfortunately for the Oceania contingent, this Saturday saw them lose all female representatives after
Daria Kasatkina's elimination early in the day at the hands of Liudmila Samsonova.
On the men's side,
Alex de Minaur will look to join his compatriot
Jordan Thompson in the tournament's fourth round. The 11th seed will face Denmark's qualifier August Holmgren, who recently eliminated Czech Tomas Machac in a tough five-set battle.
Kasatkina falls to Samsonova, No more Aussie women
Daria Kasatkina has exited Wimbledon in the third round, leaving no Australian female representatives in the tournament. The 16th seed could do little against an imposing Samsonova, and even a mid-match stoppage in the second set didn't help her recover.
It was an even start, with "Dasha" winning her first couple of service games to love and managing to pressure her opponent on return. However, after 2-2, Samsonova became the dominant force in the match, reeling off nine consecutive points to get the first break. She then saved a couple of break points against her before taking the first set 6-2 with a break right before the close.
In the second set, Samsonova secured an early break, putting her up 2-0 before a rain delay. Upon resumption, both players exchanged breaks, but they eventually found themselves level at 3-3. Samsonova was more effective in the final part of the match, winning three games in a row to seal the 6-2, 6-3 victory. Kasatkina suffered five breaks and won only 41% of points on her serve. She hit 13 winners to her opponent's 22, and also fared worse in unforced errors with 24 to Samsonova's 21. Kasatkina leaves the tournament as world No. 18 in the live rankings for now, though she could still drop a couple of positions depending on upcoming results.
