Wimbledon Briefing – UK Results: Jack Draper advances smoothly, Dan Evans wins all-British clash

Wimbledon's second day continues with first-round action, featuring more British involvement in both the women's and men's draws. Jack Draper was the protagonist, the main local hope, who benefited from his opponent Sebastian Baez's retirement to advance ahead of schedule.

On the women's side, there were no joys, as wildcards Jodie Burrage and Francesca Jones were eliminated in the first round by tough opponents.

The world No. 4 only had to be on court for one hour and 18 minutes to advance to the second round after his opponent retired midway through the third set. Nevertheless, the Brit was dominant from start to finish, securing a 6-2, 6-2, 2-1 victory against world No. 38 Baez. Draper hit 10 aces and won 93% of points on his first serve, giving his opponent virtually no opportunities.

The 23-year-old conceded just 5 points on his serve throughout the match and was clinical on his chances, capitalizing on all 5 of 5 break points against the former world No. 18 South American. Draper easily advances to the second round, where he'll face Croatian former US Open champion Marin Cilic in a straightforward start at the All England Club.

The experienced Heather Watson – former world No. 38 – had a tough debut against world No. 22 Clara Tauson, a player who, when her serve is firing, can beat anyone. It had been a good start for the world No. 143, who comfortably took the first set 6-2 in just 31 minutes. The Brit fueled local hopes after winning 67% of service points and 60% of return points.

However, things changed from the second set onwards, where an early break by Tauson gave her control of the match. From then on, the Dane held onto her serve until the end of the match and took advantage of her opportunities to close out the victory 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the second round, she will face Russia's Anna Kalinskaya.
