Alex Eala has expanded her 2026 clay-court schedule with a confirmed entry into the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma, adding another layer to an already demanding run of tournaments ahead of Roland Garros. The Filipina, currently ranked No. 45, is set to compete at the WTA 125 event from 11 to 16 May, overlapping with the second week of the Italian Open.
The decision reflects a strategic approach to maximise match volume and ranking opportunities during a period in which Eala has relatively few points to defend. Having dropped out of the Top 40 in recent weeks, the 20-year-old is seeking to stabilise her ranking position before the cut-off for seeding at the French Open.
Her clay campaign has so far delivered limited results. Eala opened the swing with a second-round loss at the Linz Open and followed it with a first-round defeat to Leylah Fernandez at the Stuttgart Open, where she was beaten 6-1, 6-4 in a match that underlined early inconsistencies on the surface.
Despite those setbacks, the schedule ahead offers multiple entry points to rebuild momentum. With tournaments in Madrid, potential appearances in Catalonia and Rome, and now Parma confirmed, Eala’s calendar positions her for sustained exposure against varied levels of competition in the weeks leading into Paris.

Eala maps out demanding clay schedule

Eala is next set to compete at the Madrid Open (21 April to 3 May), where she will enter the WTA 1000 event unseeded following her ranking drop. This increases the likelihood of facing a top-tier opponent in the early rounds, placing immediate pressure on her ability to generate results at a high level.
In parallel, she has also entered the WTA 125 Catalonia Open in La Bisbal d’Emporda, although participation is conditional. Eala will only compete there if she exits Madrid during the first week, as the two events overlap. Should she enter, she is projected to be seeded sixth, with a field that includes players such as Wang Xinyu and Ann Li.
The Parma event introduces a similar scheduling dynamic. Eala holds direct entry into the Italian Open main draw, meaning her participation in the Emilia-Romagna Open will depend on her progress in Rome. A second-week run at the WTA 1000 would rule out Parma, while an earlier exit would open the possibility of additional match play at WTA 125 level.

Rankings pressure and limited points to defend shape Eala’s clay outlook

Eala reached a career-high ranking of No. 29 in March but has since slipped after failing to defend points from her 2025 Miami Open semi-final run. The current clay swing represents a key phase in recalibrating her ranking trajectory, particularly given the limited points she is set to drop over the coming weeks.
Her 2025 clay season was similarly constrained, with just two match wins recorded across the entire swing. Victories came at WTA 125 level in Oeiras and in the opening round of Madrid, before consecutive losses to higher-ranked opposition, including Iga Swiatek in Madrid, Marta Kostyuk in Rome, and Emiliana Arango at Roland Garros.
This context reinforces the importance of her current schedule. With only 35 points to defend in Madrid and 10 in Rome, even modest progress in the upcoming tournaments could generate a net ranking gain. The accumulation of match wins across WTA 125 and WTA 1000 levels may also provide the consistency required to approach a seeding position for Roland Garros.
The 20-year-old Filipina is currently inside the Top 20 of the WTA Race (No. 17), which only considers points earned during the calendar year, that is, from the first week of 2026. This season, her best results include semi-finals at the ASB Classic and quarter-finals in tournaments such as Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
