Alexandra Eala has arrived at Flushing Meadows, and so has her supporters. She had a
huge crowd around her as she wandered with security guards making a shield around her as the Filipina prepares for her second
US Open campaign.
The Filipina is in tremendous form heading into the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. She is among a number of contestants who feel they can have a crack at major glory.
She will certainly have a huge fanbase around her following every step of the journey as the 21-year-old continues to develop into a very talented tennis player.
'Eala mania' in New York
It is no secret that Eala one of the most popular players on the WTA Tour. Her support has been well documented amid her incredible rise through the ranks with some glorious results and runs as of late, including her first ever
WTA title at the DC Open.
In all her matches, win or lose, she has a tremendous and rowdy fan base made largely of her fellow Filipinos who in turn provide her with brilliant support and urge her on on court. This has led to many of her matches being forced to be put on the main stadium in tournaments, giving the organisers headaches in where they schedule her matches.
'Eala Mania' has continued in New York with the supporters coming in their numbers to follow her. This has been shown with multiple security guards having to guide her through a wave of fans filming the talented tennis player with their phones and cheering.
Eala raised her hands in a positive gesture, in thanks for the support she is becoming very much accustomed to. She has been a trailblazer for tennis in Southeast Asia, especially her native Philippines who has started following the sport much more with her arrival proving a pivotal factor.
Eala eyeing up US Open glory
Most definitely an outside shot for the US Open title, but based on her form coming into the tournament she has to be a contender. Eala debuted in the US Open last year, and earned her maiden major win ahead of getting dumped out in the second round.
She has continued to develop as a player since and is a fully fledged member of the WTA Tour, especially after her DC Open triumph. Defeating the likes of Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka and the number one seed Jessica Pegula with a bagel third set, it was a statement title charge that has made her ominous presence felt dearly on court.
She would back that up with a fourth round in the Canadian Open where she ran out of steam against Belinda Bencic before having a very tough third round draw against Amanda Anisimova, with the American taking the spoils on home soil.
Before her singles campaign commences, she will feature in the US Open mixed doubles event held the week before. She will
partner with Felix Auger-Aliassime who will also revel in the support that Eala brings to these tournaments.
